For our Pittsburgh Project, Justin, Maggie and I went to Shadyside. We took the 71B Port Authority bus to Maryland Fifth Avenue. From there we walked through the Shadyside neighborhood. It was a very quiet neighborhood setting and very nice houses. There are a lot of newly renovated old homes. There were also many apartment buildings made out of old Victorian homes. Shadyside keeps the integrity of the old homes while making it livable for modern people. According to Niche.com, "Shadyside is the best neighborhood in Pittsburgh for millennials". It felt like a very safe, family oriented place. We walked down Maryland Avenue until we got to the area where all of the shops are. It is noted for the many shops it has including the shopping center Bakery Square which has Google, Free People, LA Fitness, and many other stores. We walked around for a little while and ended up at an ice cream place called Millie's (232 S Highland Ave Pittsburgh, PA 15206). At Millie's we talked to the woman serving the ice cream. She told us all about the different flavors of ice cream she served. She told us about the story of how the owner Chad left his position as an executive chef to open the shop in Shadyside. She also told us that Shadyside is a nice area to work in and live in. Mostly families come into the store but people come from all around Pittsburgh. A quick fact we learned is that Shadyside is named for its shady lanes. Shadyside was an escape from high rises and we enjoyed the escape from the city. It was a great visit!
